¿Are you still waiting for someone else to open doors for you?

Most professionals build their careers by waiting: waiting for someone to recommend them, for their Top Leaders to notice them, for the “right moment” to arrive. The problem is that while they wait, someone else —with less merit but more visibility— has already taken that spot.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: professional presence isn’t given to you. You build it. And it doesn’t depend on having the perfect job, the ideal boss, or a powerful network. It depends on decisions you can make today.

The myth that “your work speaks for itself”

For years, we’ve been told that if we work hard and do a great job, recognition will come naturally. It’s one of the most damaging myths in the professional world.

Great work is necessary—but not enough. If no one knows what you do, what you contribute, or the problem you solve, you simply don’t exist in the market.

"Your professional presence is what people say about you once you’ve left the room." — Jeff Bezos

That perception doesn’t build itself. It’s built with intention, consistency, and clarity about who you are and the value you bring.

5 steps to build your presence without depending on anyone

1. Define your value proposition before speaking to anyone
Who do you help? What problem do you solve? What results do you deliver?
If you can’t explain it in one sentence, no one else will remember it for you.

2. Build a consistent professional narrative
Your LinkedIn profile, how you introduce yourself in meetings, and what you say at events should all tell the same story. Inconsistency erodes trust. Consistency builds it over time.

3. Master the Elevator Pitch
You have 30 to 60 seconds to capture the attention of someone who could change your career. Prepare a message that answers: who you are, what you solve, what results you’ve achieved, and what the next step is. Practice until it sounds natural—not memorized.

4. Create visibility through valuable content
You don’t need to be an influencer. Sharing one relevant insight from your field per week is enough. People who post consistently are perceived as experts—regardless of follower count.

5. Build relationships before you need them
A presence that depends on asking for favors in times of crisis isn’t presence—it’s desperation. Real presence is built by adding value to others long before you need anything in return.

What no one tells you about being “visible”

Many professionals confuse visibility with noise. Posting constantly, being on every platform, or attending every event is not presence—it’s activity.

Real presence is when someone thinks of a problem in your field and your name comes to mind—without you having to ask.

"Letting others define how they perceive you is the most expensive way to build a career. Taking control of your narrative isn’t arrogance—it’s professional responsibility."
